COSTA MESA, Calif. – Scott Torrey (JR/Simi Valley, CA) helped himself to a huge spoonful of victory on Friday afternoon, throwing 8.1 innings en route to an 8-2 win against Golden State Athletic Conference foe Westmont. The Lions' designated hitter, Bret Collins (JR/Manhattan Beach, CA), aided Torrey's cause with a team-leading four hits on the day.

Torrey improves to 7-1 on the season, while the Blue and Gold jump to 22-11 (14-8 GSAC).

Vanguard put a run on the board in the first and added three in the third and fourth frames to take a commanding lead on the Warriors. The Pride's final score came in the sixth and it looked as though the Lions would take the shutout the distance, but Westmont rallied in the ninth to notch a pair of runs before the contest came to a close.

John Schwer (SR/Burbank, CA) went 2-for-4 with a homerun, two RBIs and a run scored on the day. His two-run jack came in the fourth after B. Collins led off the inning with a single through the left side.

Shortstop Nick Rodda (SR/Santa Rosa, CA) also had a stellar outing for Vanguard, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high four RBIs.

The outfield trio of Brandon Sandoval (FR/Fallbrook, CA), Thomas Mobley (SR/Anaheim, CA) and Schwer all registered two hits in the competition. First baseman Ian Sakry (SR/Long Beach, CA) managed a pair of his own, tallying a double and a single in the affair for Vanguard.

Justin Davis (JR/Los Angeles, CA) notched two steals to lead all players, while Mobley added one to his stat-line.

The series between the Lions and the Warriors will resume on Saturday at noon.
