SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Christian College baseball team had to put in some extra time on Friday as the defeated Westmont College 3-2 in 10 innings to open the 3-game series between the two GSAC foes.

The win marks their fourth victory against Westmont this season as SDC swept the first series back on Jan. 24-25.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 21-7 overall and 13-5 in conference play. Westmont falls to 14-11 and 7-10 in the GSAC.

Reliever Joey Aquino was credited with the win taking the mound after SDC starter Mark Vasquez lasted nine innings. Vasquez allowed nine hits, two runs, one earned while striking out five. Aquino went one inning to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Catcher Jacob Rogers hit a solo shot, his first of the season, to left field for the first run of the game in the bottom of the third.

The Warriors were able to tie the game at 1-1 in the fifth when Steven Pollex hit a sac fly to bring home William Barring. Westmont took the 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth.

Westmont looked to score more in the eighth inning but Cade Gotta made an outstanding throw to prevent Joey Gonzales from scoring on a sac fly. Gotta's throw was on target and never hit the ground from deep center field.

After his tremendous defensive play in the top of the inning, Gotta got it done on the offensive side as he hit a single through the left side with one out. Gotta then stole second base, his 24th on the season. He later scored off a throwing error from the Warrior's shortstop to tie it 2-2.

A scoreless ninth brought both teams to the tenth inning as Aquino pitched around two hits to go to the bottom of the inning.

Gotta's line drive shot to center field was caught for the first out before Chad Erickson was hit by a pitch to give the Hawks a runner. Erickson stole second base to give SDC a runner in scoring position. A groundout to second moved Erickson to third with two outs but Jeff Lusardi hit a full-count pitch through the middle of the infield to score Erickson for the win. The RBI gives Lusardi a team-leading 34 RBIs.

Eichhorst led the Hawks with two hits. San Diego Christian tallied just six hits to Westmont's 11.

Both teams will square off tomorrow for a double header starting at noon.
