Women's Soccer - Tue, Oct. 16, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Lauren Terry (Corona, Calif.) of Vanguard (Calif.) has been tabbed National Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Terry was selected based on her performances from Oct. 8 - 14 and was chosen out of a poll of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Terry earned her fourth shutout of the season - ninth career - with four saves in 100 minutes in Vanguard's 1-0 overtime victory against then-No. 20 The Master's (Calif.) on Oct. 9. The sophomore continued her stellar week with a season-high seven save performance in a 2-1 win over Biola (Calif.) on Oct. 13. In total, Terry made 11 saves and surrendered one goal in 190 minutes to help extend the Lion's unbeaten streak to six matches.

Terry, who has played more than 800 minutes in goal this season, ranks 12th nationally with a 0.67 goals against average.

Terry is 7-2 overall with four shutouts in 2012. She started in two other team-shutouts for the VU goal-keeping staff. Her two losses were sustained against ranked teams (then-No. 2 Lindsey Wilson and then-No.17 Cal State San Marcos). She is currently 6-0 in league play and boasts 27 saves on the year.

"Lauren has come up with some crucial saves in every big game we have played this year," Director of Soccer Randy Dodge said. "She has really stepped up as an underclassman and has been a great leader for us in the way she plays."

Terry was named Golden State Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, October 15th. She previously earned the award on October 1st.

"I am so humbled to receive acknowledgement from the NAIA and the GSAC," Terry said. "I would not be where I am right now without the constant encouragement from the team. I think this week's performance is so special because the team knew what kind of competition we were going against and we didn't hold back and continued to work hard for each other."

Terry is the second Lions' player to reap national recognition for her effort on the soccer pitch. The first was junior forward Jordan Davidson (Tucson, Ariz.), who collected NAIA Offensive Player of the Week on September 11th, 2012.
