Fullerton, CA- The Royals rolled up a 6-3 win over the University of the Southwest on Thursday afternoon.  Sophomore Sabrina Miller recorded her first singles win of the season.

Starting out in singles play, USW actually earned the first match win of the day winning the two sets played on the fourth court.

But the Royals responded and won the next four singles matches.

Junior Alyssa Penner provided the first HIU point with a 6-2, 6-1 win on the third singles court.

Junior Ariana Cobos finished third thanks to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Leslie Rodriguez on the number one court.

Then it was Miller's turn to finish off her opponent.  Miller earned the first set win 6-2 before working for a 6-4 second set win.

Junior Sarah Melendez controlled her first set against Amber Garza 6-3.  In the second set, Garza made Melendez win an extra game but Melendez accepted the challenge and won 7-5.

The marathon match of the day came on singles court six between Junior Alyssa Pritchett and Kasi Krieger.  After 2:45 worth of playing, Krieger finally beat Pritchett in their third set.

Needing just one match win in doubles to win the overall match, Cobos and Melendez quickly took care of that need as they won 8-4 on the second doubles court.

HIU fell in number three doubles.

Even with the team match already decided, the action on doubles court number one was worth the wait.  Miller and Penner started out down 4-1 before rallying to be down 6-5.  After a game win on each side for a 7-6 score, the Miller/ Penner duo made their move and won the final three games for the match win.

Head Coach Ryan Young said, "Our ladies really grinded it our today.  Starting with singles we really set the tone and it carried over to doubles where we were able to keep the momentum going.  It was nice to see everyone compete today."

The Royals will return to the Cal State Fullerton courts for match action on Monday when they host Austin College.  The women are set for a 2:00 pm start.
