Men's Basketball - Sat, Mar. 1, 2014

COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 10 Vanguard completed its momentous Golden State Athletic Conference slate on Saturday with a 93-81 win over San Diego Christian in The Pit. The 2013-14 Lions finish the regular season at 24-6 (11-3 GSAC), moving them into a tie for third with the 1990-91 men's basketball team on the all-time list for most victories in a season.

Senior Preston Wynne (Wellpinit, Wash.) scored a contest-best 23 points while collecting 4 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

The entire class of 2014 made a big impact right out of the gate on senior night, as all four seniors who played scored crucial first-half points for The Pride.

Wynne notched the games' first bucket, followed by classmate Kirk Sheplay (Paso Robles, Calif.) who swished one from behind the arc at 16:22 to give Vanguard a 13-4 edge. Tino Zaragoza (Orange, Calif.) was next to contribute, with a block and a lay-up, and Swing Chuang dropped two important points at the 10-minute mark to regain the lead for Vanguard after the Lions went down 23-22 on the previous possession.

Wynne scored a game-high 13 points before the break on 5-for-10 shooting. He hit a trio of treys and garnered four steals in the period. Junior DeAngelo Jones (Cheney, Wash.) dished four assists and managed 12 points in the half, eight of which he scored from the charity stripe.

The opening 20 minutes featured eight lead changes and five deadlocks, though Vanguard had built a 16-point, 53-37 lead by the time it retired to the locker room.

The Lions sank 7-of-16 tries from downtown and shot 14-for-15 from the free throw line in the half.

The second saw the Blue and Gold go up by as many as 22, but the Hawks didn't stop playing and cut the margin to 12 in the final 10 seconds of the game.

The Pride hit 11 3-pointers in the competition, nine of which belonged to Wynne and Gorman, who nailed five and four, respectively, in the win.

Gorman tallied 21 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists on the night, while Jones and Mason scored 14 and 11 for Vanguard. Mason also grabbed 7 off of the glass, though freshman Zach Allmon (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) was the game leader with 10 caroms of his own.

Jones facilitated his teammate's scoring with a game-high 7 assists. He also recorded 3 boards and 2 steals.

Vanguard heads into the GSAC Tournament as the top-seeded men's basketball squad. The Lions will host the No. 8 seed on March 6th in The Pit at 7:30pm.
