Costa Mesa, CA – No. 1 Vanguard completed its perfect 25-0 (14-0 GSAC) regular season campaign on Saturday with an 82–59 win over Golden State Athletic Conference opponent San Diego Christian. A trio of starting seniors, Leigha Bednar (Keller, Texas), Taylor Belmont (Oregon City, Ore.) and Nicole Ballestero (Orange, Calif.), were honored prior to the affair for their respective contributions to the women's basketball program.
Belmont finished the contest one rebound shy of a triple-double, but notched her 11th double-double, nonetheless, with 14 points, 10 assists and 9 boards. She has two triple-doubles under her belt in 2013-14.
The Lions led the entire first half, though the Hawks came within four as late as 11:32 (21-17) before Vanguard retired into the locker room with a 38-27 advantage.
Sophomore Jordie Smith (Wilton, Calif.) paced The Pride with a game-best 12 points at the break. She shot 5-for-8 from the field and hit one from behind the arc in the period.
In the second, Ballestero took over, scoring 14 points as Vanguard built its lead to as many as 21 (twice) before freshman Ashley Land (Eugene, Ore.) came into the contest and sank a last minute 3-pointer to extend the final margin to 23 points (82-59).
Ballestero's line featured 22 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
Junior Melissa Norman (Elk Grove, Calif.), sophomore Samantha Doucette (Irvine, Calif.) and Bednar posted 10, 8 and 6, respectively, to round out the Lions' scoring. Norman also snagged eight off of the glass in her 15 minutes on the court.
Vanguard's next competition, the first round of the GSAC Tournament, will be held at home (7:30pm) on March 5th. The Lions are the number one seed and will therefore host eighth-seeded Arizona Christian.
