Fullerton, CA- Hope International beat Biola 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon to earn their first GSAC win of the season. The Alyssas - juniors Alyssa Penner and Alyssa Pritchett- led the charge by having a hand in four match wins. All six Royals enjoyed a taste of victory somewhere along the way.
Starting with singles play, the matches finished almost in the order of the courts they were made on.
Court one saw Biola's Kathryn Ashford beat sophomore Sabrina Miller in straight sets.
On the second court, junior Ariana Cobos held off Madeline Heer 6-4 in their first set. In the second, Cobos took control early and cruised to a 6-1 win.
Singles three and four were the only courts not to finish order of court play. Freshman Corinna Ramos came up short on the fourth court 6-4 and 6-1.
Penner and Susan Carmichael, playing number three singles, were the only two to play into the third set. Carmichael grabbed the first set 6-3. But Penner roared back and took sets two and three with an identical score of 6-1.
Junior Sarah Melendez won in number five singles 6-2 and 6-3 over Lauren Vogel.
The last singles match playing saw Pritchett take down Maura Lopez 6-1 and 6-3 on court six. Pritchett's win gave HIU a 4-2 lead after singles play.
With everyone's singles match finishing early enough, number one doubles was already playing while the other singles finished up. Penner teamed with Miller and cruised to an 8-2 win. The doubles win secured the team win for Hope International as they held a 5-2 advantage.
In doubles number two, the Biola tandem of Ashford and Carmichael slowed the HIU tandem of Cobos and Melendez by a score of 8-5.
The last match playing on the day came on doubles number three. Ramos and Pritchett turned the tables on Kelsey Post and Vogel as the HIU duo pulled out the 8-5 win.
The Royals will have nine days off before playing again when they host University of the Southwest on Thursday, March 6, at 1:00 pm at Cal State Fullerton. The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they play Concordia at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center at 1:00 pm.
