COSTA MESA, Calif. – After suffering defeat on Friday in the series opener, the Hawks corrected and adjusted on Saturday to win both games 6-2 against Vanguard.

 

The two wins bring the Hawks record to 16-4 overall and 9-3 in GSAC play. Vanguard falls to 9-8 overall and 5-7 in conference.

 

Gabriel Hemmer pitched a complete game in Game No. 1 for his fourth win on the season. He struck out 12 Lions batters allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned.

 

SDC blasted right out of the get go. The Hawks held a 4-0 lead in the top of the first with no outs. Jeff Lusardi doubled home Cade Gotta from second. Taylor Eichhorst then delivered his first triple of the season and brought home Lusardi and Chad Erickson. Peter Hoyt then plated Eichhorst with a double.

 

Lusardi hit another double in the second inning for an RBI as Gotta scored from third to give the Hawks a 5-1 lead.

 

The Hawks scored another run in the eighth before Hemmer mowed down the Lions hitters in the bottom of the ninth in order striking out two of the three batters.

 

Eichhorst and Lusardi tallied two RBI each. Gotta was 1-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases in Game 1.

 

In Game 2, David Johnson toed the rubber lasting 6.2 innings in the win for his second of the season. He allowed seven hits, two runs, while striking out three. Dawson Jones came in to get the one out save for his second of the year.

 

SDC had another 4-run in the game, this time in the third inning.

 

Lusardi singed home Gotta for the first run of the game. Eichhorst then hit another triple, making it number two on the season and of the day, to bring home two Hawks runners. Hoyt hit a sac fly to plate Eichhorst for the 4-0 lead.

 

Richard Aguirre started off the sixth with a walk and later scored from a wild pitch. Lusardi was it again as hit a single up the middle on the first pitch he saw in the at bat to score Gotta to increase San Diego Christian's lead to 6-0.

 

Vanguard scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a mini comeback but the Hawks held steady for the win.

 

Just like in Game 1, Lusardi and Eichhorst collected two RBI in the game giving both 4 RBI on the day between the two games. The Hawks racked up 23 hits on the day, 14 in Game 1 and nine in Game 2.

 

San Diego Christian travels to Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday for one game against the Cougars before they come home and welcome No. 9-ranked Concordia University, Friday and Saturday.
