COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 3 Vanguard shutout Arizona Christian 9-0 to open Golden State Athletic Conference tennis play Saturday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The Lions, the 2013 GSAC Champions, have won 12-consecutive regular season league matches dating back to April 24, 2012.
With the win, Vanguard moves to 1-1 (1-0 GSAC) on the year.
The day started with doubles play, where the Blue and Gold tallied three fast points. Sophomore Stefan Kilchhofer and Roger Muri trounced Arizona Christian's Andrew Barnett and Ian Glessing 8-1 at first doubles, while sophomore Daymon Johnson and junior Miguel Saiz Perez took down Tyler Cawthorne and Michael Munguia 8-2 in the number two pairing. Vanguard's third duo, Justin Seller and Filip Burnac followed suit, beating Adam West and David Castano 8-3.
Familiar match-ups ensued in the singles bouts, as Kilchhofer defeated Barnett 6-1, 6-2 in the number one slot. Muri secured a point (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2, while Vanguard's Saiz Perez edged Cawthorne 6-1, 7-5 in third singles.
Not much changed in the fourth match, as Johnson made quick work of Munguia (6-1, 6-2), followed by respective wins at numbers four and five from Burnac (6-0, 6-2 vs Castano) and sophomore Michael Rjazanov (6-1, 6-2 vs West).
"It is always nice to start conference play with a 9-0 score," head coach Mattias Johansson said. "Overall, this was a pretty solid performance, but we definitely need to improve in some areas."
The Lions will take a week off before returning to the court on Saturday, February 15 at home against Hope International. The GSAC match will begin at 11:00 am.
