COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard did a bit of spring cleaning on Saturday afternoon at the VU Softball Field, sweeping Pomona-Pitzer to improve to 6-2 overall. Sophomore Taylor Doyle (Oceanside, Calif.) (2-0) and freshman Emily Russell (Calabasas, Calif.) (1-0) notched the respective pitching victories while junior Haley Croce (San Diego, Calif.) smashed a walk-off triple in the opener to propel the Lions past the Sagehens 2-1.

Croce and freshman Jo Karla Jimenez (Brawley, Calif.) posted two knocks apiece in game one. Both players went 2-for-3 at the plate and garnered an RBI for The Pride. Croce also stole a base and scored a run in the competition.

The nightcap saw more offensive production from Vanguard as it out-hit Pomona-Pitzer 11-6.

Juniors Taylor Hallahan (Santee, Calif.) and Shelby Kuryllo (Corona, Calif.) accounted for six of the Lions' hits, each going 3-for-4 with an RBI in game two of the DH. Hallahan's performance featured a triple, a stolen base and a pair of runs.

Jimenez, the Vanguard designated hitter, matched her impressive game one effort to bat .667 on the day.

Russell threw a complete game shut-out in the first start of her career.

Vanguard is back in action on Valentine's Day against Holy Names University. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
