LANCASTER, Calif. – The No. 22 ranked San Diego Christian College baseball team got off on the right foot in their season debut on Wednesday sweeping the two game series against University of Antelope Valley by the same score of 7-1.

"It was great to be playing again," Director of Baseball Operations Mike Lusardi said. You could tell by the intensities of the players. It's been a long off-season and we responded well both games."

In the first game, the Hawks tallied the seven runs on nine hits. Codi Scanlon, freshman transfer from Gonzaga University, went 4.1 innings allowing five hits and an earned run to get the win. He struck out three in the 16 batters he faced. Jake Sween worked 2.2 innings in relief allowing no hits and striking out one to collect the save.

After a scoreless first, SDC scored one run in the second. Michael Stowers scored after Peter Hoyt drove him in on a fielder's choice. Jeff Lusardi singled home two runners in the third inning as the Hawks plated a pair. Lusardi also had a two RBI double to right field in the top of the seventh inning. He finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and a run. Chad Erickson went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.

In game two's 7-1 win, the Hawks tallied 13 hits on the seven runs. Calvin Chambers toed the rubber for SDC lasting six innings striking out four and allowing an earned run with his first win of the season. Jimmy Shaw came in for an inning of relief striking out one.

Cade Gotta led off the game with a solo homerun to left field on the first pitch. He had a monster game going 4-for-4 with 3 RBI. Gilbert Viera went 2-4 with a run scored.

"We definitely have a lot of work to do when it comes to making sure we understand our offensive and defensive plays," Mike Lusardi said. "For the most part we responded okay but there were a couple of time we missed signs but that just comes with repetition and game experience. The good thing is that most of our players are returning players so they know what is expected. The new guys will catch up quick I am sure."

The Hawks will have little time to rest as the head back on the bus Friday to travel and take on Westmont College for a 3-game series. Friday's game is slated for a 2 p.m. start and Saturday's first game is at noon. To follow with live stats you may click here. To watch it live, the feed can be found here.
