Fullerton, CA- After a close first half, Junior Destiny Chavez provided the needed spark in the second half as Hope International beat Lindenwood-Belleville (IL) 86-72 on Friday. Senior Andrina Rendon scored a game high 27 points. Junior Krystyn Jacobs delivered 22 points with 7 assists. Chavez scored all 11 of her points after the half in her first start of the season.
Rendon opened the scoring for the Royals (9-1) with a layup assisted by Chavez. But just ten seconds later the Lynx (11-7) hit a three pointer to grab their first lead of the contest.
That three from LUB started a chain of four straight alternating three pointers by the teams. Rendon hit the first one for the Royals- her first of five threes on the night. Bauman closed out the three point barrage with her first of the game for an 8-6 HIU advantage.
After Jacobs scored to give HIU a 10-6 lead, the two teams exchanged baskets and free throws to keep the score within four and six points over the next five minutes. Finally up seven, the Royals allowed the Lynx to go on a 14-6 run and take the lead on three different occasions.
Jacobs nailed a pair of free throws to move HIU back ahead. The Royals led the rest of the half barring one tie.
At the break, Hope International held just a 40-37 edge. Rendon led all scorers with 17 points in the first half on 5-8 shooting from the field and 4-4 shooting from the free throw line. Jacobs cashed in 12 points in the first twenty minutes. Bauman scored 11 first half points.
Lindenwood-Belleville converted a three pointer their first possession of the second half to knot the score at 40-40.
From that last tie of the game, the Royals used a 12-2 run to move ahead for good and grab their first double digit lead of the night.
HIU did not allow LUB to climb closer than seven points the rest of the way. The lead grew as large as 20 points in the game for the Royals.
Both Rendon and Jacobs scored 10 points in the second half. However, Chavez was the star as she was perfect shooting in the second half- 5-5 from the field and 1-1 from the free throw line. Chavez ended her night with a line of 11 points (a career high), 5 assists, and 5 rebounds.
Free throw shooting was a premium for both teams in the game as each team only missed three free throws all night- HIU made 15-18 and LUB was 13-16.
Senior Shawna Staves finished the night as the game's leading rebounder with 11 boards.
Head Coach Bill Crammer said, "We started out flat and just played back and forth and were not very focused. At halftime, we regrouped and came out with a much better defensive effort and were much stronger rebounding. A great defensive effort by Destiny held their leading scorer to five points below her average. We are looking forward to a couple of tough games at The Master's including #14 Westminster College and a tough NAIA DII Dakota Wesleyan squad."
The Royals will meet up with Westminster a week from today at The Master's College in Santa Clarita at 7:00 pm.
