Fullerton, CA- Following a three year hiatus, Hope International is pleased to announce the (re-)hiring of Joe Lurker as the Head Coach of Men's Soccer. Coach Lurker previously held the Hope International head men's soccer job from 2006-2010.
Hope International Athletic Director John Turek stated, "We are very excited about bringing Joe Lurker back as our Men's Soccer Coach. He is a proven recruiter as well as an outstanding coach and mentor on the field. His previous experience at HIU gives him a very clear picture of the task at hand and a clear understanding of what it is going to take to compete at a very high level in the GSAC."
Coach Lurker commented, "I missed coaching, constantly being around the game, the relationships with my players, and the HIU community. I am excited about coming back."
In the previous five year tenure of Coach Lurker, the Royals were 37-51-7 but were 26-28-7 in the final three years. The HIU men made two trips to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament in those five years. Eight different players earned NCCAA All-American honors with six total earning All-GSAC honors.
The 2010 campaign- the previous end of the Lurker era- saw the Royals finish 11-10-1 and 5-4-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. Both win totals represent at least a tie of the highest win mark for the Royals since they joined the GSAC in 1999. The Royals qualified for the GSAC playoffs for the first time ever in 2010.
The one match talked about the most still to this day from the early Lurker coaching years is a 1-0 win over then #2 Azusa Pacific back in 2006.
Even with being very proud of the accomplishments of his teams on the field, the one area of his previous coaching tenure Coach Lurker is most proud of is his ongoing relationships with his former players. He continues to enjoy regular contact with a number of HIU players/ alumni despite being away from the program for the three year period.
In his three years away from HIU, Coach Lurker has worked primarily on the administrative side of athletics, recreation, and fitness including most recently as the Director of Athletics at California Sports and Fit. Dating back to his days of originally working at HIU, Coach Lurker helps promote Goalshot- a soccer training device.
Educationally, Coach Lurker earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Biola University in May 2005. He added a Master's Degree in Athletic Administration from Concordia University (CA) in December 2007.
Coach Lurker and his wife, Emma, reside in Orange, CA. They attend Mariners Church in Irvine, CA.
