The No. 6 Concordia Eagles recorded their second-straight blowout win on Saturday, November 30, in a 82-58 win over Grand View (IA) in the Vanguard Thanksgiving Tournament in Costa Mesa, CA
Montreal Harris was an effective seven-of-nine from the field for 16 points, also grabbing six boards. Point guard Donnell Phifer was five-of-six from the field and five-of-seven from the line for 15 points. Kiefer Douse was perfect off the bench, five-for-five from the field, one-for-one from three, and two-for-two from the line for 13 points. Tim Harris was the fourth Eagle in double figures with 11. Concordia won the rebounding battle 39-30, and shot 53% from the field, compared to 33% for the Vikings.
"That was our best first half of the year," Concordia head coach Ken Ammann said. "We showed great focus on defense and our shot selection was excellent. Kiefer Douse has been improving every game and had a great scoring day. We learned a lot from our loss to San Marcos and are getting better everyday."
Four minutes in Concordia was up eight, 10-2, on a layup from M. Harris. Grand View cut it back to four, but a jumper from Douse at the 10 minute mark doubled it back to eight. Over the next eight minutes Concordia went on a 23-16 run, capped by a free throw from DeLaun Frazier. Concordia scored seven of the next eight to lead 49-28 at the half.
Five minutes into the second half Grand View cut the lead down to 12, but nine straight points, seven from Phifer, pushed the edge back to 21. A three from T. Harris with five minutes left pushed the advantage to 24 and he hit a jumper two possessions later to make it 28, 73-45. That would mark the largest lead of the game, as the Eagles won by 24.
Concordia used the Vanguard Tournament to improve to 7-2, while Grand View fell to 6-3 on the year. Concordia will return home on Tuesday, December 3, at 7:00 pm to play Bethesda inside CU Arena.
