GSAC opponents sweep the NAIA Women's Soccer Player of the Week awards before facing each other in the GSAC Championship.
Brooke Springer of Concordia (Calif.) has been selected as the National Offensive Player of the Week and Lindsey Smith of Westmont (Calif.) has been named the NAIA Women's Soccer National Defensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Springer and Smith – the final women's soccer weekly award winners of the 2013 season – were chosen based on their performances from Nov. 4 – 10 and were selected out of a pool of conference, independent and unaffiliated group winners.
Smith, a Pleasanton, Calif., native, posted her third-straight shutout against Vanguard (Calif.) and her eighth clean sheet of the season in the Warriors' 4-0 win over the 11th-ranked Lions in the semifinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Tournament on Nov. 8. The senior goalkeeper made one save in 90 minutes, as the Westmont defense held Vanguard to only five shots. On the season, Smith ranks second in the NAIA in goals against average at 0.36 and has not allowed a goal in her last four matches – a span of approximately 333 minutes.
Springer, a senior forward from Westminster, Calif., lifted Concordia (Calif.) to a 3-2 win over No. 15 The Master's (Calif.) in the semifinals of the GSAC Tournament on Nov. 8. She accounted for two of the Eagles three goals in the contest, including the game-winner in the 98th minute. Springer owns seven goals this season with five coming in her last two appearances.
Springer is the second individual from Concordia to receive the Offensive Player of the Week award this year, joining fellow forward Megan Daniels, who claimed the honor on Oct. 29.
Concordia hosts Westmont at 1 p.m. on Friday in the GSAC Tournament championship. The winner receives the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round.
