COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 11 Vanguard posted a 1-0 victory over Biola in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the VU Soccer Field to move to 15-3 on the year. The Eagles are eliminated from post-season play with the loss and finish their 2013 campaign at 9-9-1.
Sophomore Ashley McCutcheon (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), recently named to the 2013 All-GSAC team, scored the Lions' game-winner five minutes into the second period, netting a header off of a Jennifer Martin (La Mirada, Calif.) corner.
Martin was selected for the 2013 All-GSAC squad, along with senior Kayla Arenas (Fullerton, Calif.) and senior Jordan Davidson (Tucson, Ariz.). Davidson repeated as GSAC Player of the Year, this time sharing the honor with Westmont's goalkeeper, Lindsey Smith.
McCutcheon, a defender, has four goals, all off of the forehead, on the year for the Pride.
Junior Lauren Terry (Corona, Calif.), who registered eight saves in her complete game shut-out effort, made a three incredible stops in the final period to ensure the victory. Her most impressive save occurred in the final ten minutes, as she laid-out to block a high-speed, on-target header by Biola's Brittney Sayre (Castaic, Calif.).
No. 6-seed Biola out-shot 3-seed Vanguard 15-11 in the contest and had twice (8-4) as many on-target tries as the Lions.
Vanguard advances in GSAC Tournament play and will travel to Santa Barbara on Friday, November 8, for a rematch with No. 3 Westmont. The semifinal contest is scheduled for 2:00 pm. The Warriors defeated the Lions twice during the 2013 regular season.
