EL CAJON, Calif. -- Chardonnay Shula scored 14 points and Briana Martinez added 13 as San Diego Christian (1-0) won their season opener against William Jessup University 58-54 Friday night. 


Shula scored first for the Lady Hawks to kick off the 2013-14 season with a free throw. The first half was tightly contested as neither team could gain an advantage by more than five points. San Diego Christian led late by five with 3:04 remaining in the first half. The Warriors' Ashley Rose converted a layup as time expired to tie the game heading into halftime 25-25.


Trailing 33-32 with 12:35 remaining in the game, Shula and San Diego Christian took the lead on a layup. Then in the next five scoring possessions for the Lady Hawks, all of them were from beyond the arc to increase their lead to 49-37, San Diego Christian's biggest lead of the game. 


The Lady Hawks would hold serve to secure the win. San Diego Christian shot 40.4 percent from the floor including 34.8 from 3-point land. William Jessup ended with 33.9 percent shooting from the floor and shot 8-of-23 from beyond the arc. The Lady Hawks tallied 30 rebounds, 13 offensive.  Freshman Gabrielle Concepcion scored double digits for San Diego Christian with 10 points.  Irene Lopez blocked two shots on the night. San Diego Christian finished with six blocked shots on the night. 


The Lady Hawks are back on the court Nov. 2 against NCAA D II Cal State LA in an exhibition game. Tip off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
