COSTA MESA, Calif. - Vanguard Volleyball Tournament - Vanguard volleyball made a statement in its home opener on Friday, defeating La Sierra University 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-18). The Lions got production from all around, with five players boasting five or more kills and five players garnering more than four digs. Sophomore libero Kelly Heenan (Costa Mesa, Calif.) registered two service aces and led all players with 20 digs.


The Pride jumped out to an early lead behind well-rounded team play, taking the first set 25-20. Heenan was everywhere, picking up nine digs for the Lions' defense. Freshman Sarah McKinny (Santa Barbara, Calif.) demonstrated her accuracy, posting a set-high four kills to hit for a .429 percentage in the set.

Vanguard powered through set two, pushing its nerves aside to defeat the Golden Eagles 25-13. Sophomore setter Carly Maxwell distributed the ball well, racking up 17 assists for the Blue and Gold while classmate Ashli Bellinger (Chandler, Ariz.) picked up a pair of service aces.

The third set featured more stellar play by the home team as VU cruised to a 25-18 win and earned its first home sweep of the year.

Maxwell finished the day with 35 assists to nearly double all other players in the match. Bellinger, McKinny, Kendall Haldi (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Jessica Neves (Mission Viejo, Calif.) were impressive at the net with nine, eight, eight and seven kills, respectively. Senior Candace Cedarstrom (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) chipped in five kills off of six attempts and junior Grace Konstanzer (Irvine Calif.) picked up nine digs and two kills of her own.

The Lions aced La Sierra eight times in the match. Bellinger and sophomore Morgan Burt (Bakersfield, Calif.) tallied three apiece on the day.

With the win VU improves to 8-5 overall. Vanguard will take on MidAmerica Nazarene (RV) on Saturday at 11:00am to close out tournament play.
