COSTA MESA, Calif. - Vanguard men's soccer came out of nowhere to post not only its first and second goals of the year, but a dominant shutout victory on Friday evening. The Lions rattled off a season-high 14 shots en route to a 2-0 win over Soka University of America at the VU Soccer Field.

Senior Kyle O'Brien (Garden Grove, Calif.) donned a fresh haircut and some fresh moves as he shook the Soka defense throughout the match. His hard work would pay off in the 36th minute when freshman teammate Luke Kadillak (San Diego, Calif.) set him up with a fine pass from the right side which he was able to one-touch over the head of Soka goalkeeper Danny Smyth to give the Lions the 1-0 advantage.

In the second period, sophomore Brandon Antonissen (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) hooked Kadillak up with his first career goal at Vanguard, shooting a ball through the Soka defense which Kadillak was able to net into the bottom right corner of the goal.

The VU defense held up its end of the bargain for the rest of the contest, and allowed just three shots in the entire match. Sophomore Alex Figueroa (El Monte, Calif.) and freshman Luca Licciardi (Sparks, Nev.) split time in goal for The Pride, with Licciardi recording VU's lone save.

Kadillak led the team with four shots on the day, including two on goal, while sophomore Edgar Hernandez (Santa Ana, Calif.) and O'Brien managed two apiece.

With the win, Vanguard improves to 1-3-1 on the year.

The Lions head out of town to take on Univ. of Rio Grande at Lindsey Wilson on September 12th at 7:00pm.
