COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard University (6-3, 2-0) hosted its Golden State Athletic Conference opener against the Arizona Christian Firestorm (4-3-1, 0-1-1), ending in a 2-0 victory for the seventhr-anked Lions with both scores occurring in the first half. Nicole Dunn (SR/Lake Forest, CA) earned the game winning goal on an unassisted shot to the bottom left corner of the goal. Just under three minutes later, Kiera Muniz (JR/Stockton, CA) took the Haley Bruce (JR/San Diego, CA) corner kick and poked it into the back of the net.
Vanguard took 13 shots in the first half to only one for the Firestorm. Similarly, the Blue and Gold limited ACU to no corner kicks while the Pride took five during the first 45 minutes of play. At the halftime intermission, Vanguard goalkeeper Amanda Valentine (JR/Livermore, CA) was only tested once while Tahlia Miears stopped eight shots. Moving to the second half of play, the Lions continued to fire away but none of their 11 shots would find the goal as four were saved by the ACU goalie. The Firestorm only attempted two shots in the final 45 minutes and none of them threatened Valentine between the posts.
Off the bench, Malia Tilton (JR/Orange, CA) tallied a game high seven shots while Muniz and Lopp slotted in tied for second with four each. Dunn and Bruce fired off three apiece. In all, 14 of the teams' 24 attempts were on frame leading to the two goals and one assist at the 20th and 23rd minutes respectively. The shutout was Valentine's second straight to begin conference play and fourth overall. Today's victory over Arizona Christian marks the seventh straight victory by the Blue and Gold.
