COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions (3-3) faced off against Soka (1-5) in hopes of continuing the momentum from a blowout match on the road. That hope was realized as the Lions beat Soka 5-0. In an full force attack, the Lions had complete control of the game from the first minute and kept Soka at a stronghold. Kiera Muniz (JR/Stockton, CA), Kim Benner (SO/Chino, CA), Nicole Dunn (SR/Lake Forest, CA), and Madison Lopp (SR/Anaheim, CA) were extremely forceful in that pressure as each of them pushed forward and got off five or six shots respectively.

The Lions came to the field ready for action. In the second minute, the Pride had a goal on the board. Kiera Muniz dropped a pass back to Nicole Dunn, and Dunn beamed it high on the back post to give the Lions the lead and earn her first goal of the season. With energy from the first goal, the Lions racked up shot after shot until Kim Benner gave the Lions their second goal in the 11th minute. The Lions left the first half with two goals and an impressive 19 shots and six corner kicks while keeping Soka to only one shot.

After the break, the Lions kept that offensive push in motion. The Lions increased their lead with a goal from Kiera Muniz in the 49th minute off of an assist by Madison Lopp. Six minute later, Dunn earned her second goal on the day off of a corner kick by Lopp and a clean pass from Muniz. The Lions maintained control of the game, only giving up three shots in the second half. Caitlin Smith (SR/Riverside, CA) gave Vanguard their last scoring opportunity by setting up Anna Montemore for the goal off the post to earn the 5-0 victory.

Over all Vanguard had a season high 34 shots with 18 shots on goal and 12 corner kicks. Vanguard proved that the best defense can be a strong offense and controlled the ball so well that neither Amanda Valentine (JR/Livermore, CA), the starting goal keeper, or Jessica Taukeiaho (SR/Rancho Cucamonga, CA) had a chance to earn saves because there simply were not shots in jeopardy of scoring.

Next Match: Saturday, September 16  at 11:00 a.m. against No. 13 Ottawa University (KS).
