Phoenix, AZ- On Saturday, Arizona Christian used a balanced attack to beat San Diego Christian 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21). Juniors Jackie Stein and Breanna Scott both delivered 11 kills while Sophomore Amanda Bakonyi finished with 10 kills.
The opening set was the tightest of the evening as the teams exchanged ten ties and four lead changes. After early lead changes, the Firestorm (8-3, 1-0 GSAC) found themselves up 14-7. But the Hawks (5-4, 0-1 GSAC) answered with 10-2 run to take control of the set.
Scott topped with five kills in the first set but Senior Alli Lemnitzer hit. 400 while producing three kills.
ACU fell behind 4-0 to start the second set but turned the tide with a 10-1 run to move in front for good in the set. The Firestorm accounted for only seven kills as a team in the set but forced the Hawks into 14 hitting errors.
Set three saw ACU jump out to 5-0 lead and not look back. Bakonyi put down two kills in the opening five points. Lemnitzer and Bakonyi teamed up to record a block on set point to move Arizona Christian ahead 2-1 after three sets.
Bakonyi earned five kills overall in the third.
SDCC began the fourth and final set up 5-1 and rolled into a 13-9 edge. After chipping away, ACU finally overcame the deficit at 18-17 on a kill from Stein. The Firestorm remained ahead from there and Lemnitzer notched a service ace on match point to secure the win.
Stein had the hot hand with five kills in the final set.
Defensively, Scott was good for 15 digs. Sophomore Delaney Harris ended up with 13 digs. Stein had 11 digs while Senior Hailey Carpenter added 10 digs to her 25 assists. Lemnitzer had a hand in six blocks.
The win for the Firestorm snapped a nine match losing streak to the Hawks.
On Tuesday, the Firestorm will face Benedictine-Mesa at Mesa Community College. First serve is planned for 7:00 pm.
