COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions (5-1) had a nice break from the heat in a match up against University of Antelope Valley (1-3). After a slow 45 minutes, the Lions were on fire in the second half with 13 shots that resulted in five goals. After 90 minutes, the Lions had swept Antelope Valley, 6-0. Sebastian Cortez (JR/Hawthorne, CA) and Martin Arrieta (JR/Pasadena, CA) both scored five points in the contest to pace the Pride.
The first half was heavy on defense from both sides, but Vanguard was able to get a goal in the 2nd minute. Cortez had a corner kick that Jared Gould (SO/Prescott, AZ) headed in effortlessly. From that moment on, the tone was set and Vanguard was all in.
After the slow first half, Vanguard came into the second half looking to increase the lead and did so successfully. In the 59th minute, Cortez broke through the defense with Arrieta. Arrieta tipped the ball between the defenders in the 18-yard box to Cortez, and Cortez sent it into the back of the net. Less than thirty seconds later, Arrieta was back and sent it sailing into the top right corner to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
Both teams played a competitive game despite the differential. Seven yellow cards were issued, five to Antelope Valley and two to Vanguard. In the 66th minute, after a yellow card was issued, Cortez added another goal to the lead from a penalty kick. The last two goals were helped along by Arrieta. First, Arrieta gave the assist to Ruben Arellano in the 74th minute. Shortly after, Arrieta crossed the ball to Isaac Pinto (FR/Mission Viejo, CA) for Pinto's first career goal. Pinto scored the last goal of the game, and gave Vanguard a 6-0 victory.
In the end, Vanguard out shot Antelope Valley 23-10. Vanguard took 14 corner kicks while the Pioneers had one. Victor Negrete (FR/Stanton, CA) started in goal for the Lions and earned one save before Brandon Gomez (SR/Los Angeles, CA) took over and grabbed three saves in the second half.
