COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions (1-2) found their rhythm against Marymount California (0-3-1) today as the they won 8-1. In complete contrast from the last game, the Lions had an impressive 30 shots with 14 shots on goal to give them their final eight. Five of the goals came from the bench showing the all-around talent of the Pride. The last time these two squads met it was in the 2016 NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, which the Lions won 3-0 behind a hat trick from Madison Lopp (SR/Anaheim, CA).

Ten minutes in and Vanguard was showing their strength. Kim Benner (SO/Chino, CA) crossed the ball to Madison Lopp before sending it over to Kiera Muniz (JR/Stockton, CA) to score her first goal of the season. Eight minutes later, Muniz scored another off an assist from Malia Tilton (JR/Orange, CA).  Muniz wasn't the only Lion to score two goals though; Anna Montemor (FR/Snohomish, WA) followed up Muniz's with two goals of her own. In the 24th minute, Madison Lopp crossed the ball to Montemor who sailed it into the back of the net, but three minutes later, Montemor was back with a goal off an assist from Emily Miramontes (FR/Fullerton, CA) to give the Lions a 4-0 lead.  

The Mariners were able to score a goal in the 37th minute, but the Lions added one more off a penalty kick from Miramontes, earning her first goal. Erica Wadell (SR/Yucaipa, CA) then had a fast break past the Mariners' defense in the 41st minute and tipped it to Miramontes for the goal. Within seconds Ayana Suarez gave the Lions another goal before the end of the first half. The Lions left for a break with a 7-1 lead.

After the break, the scoring slowed down, but the aggression remained. In the second half, the Lions had eight fouls called and a red card while the Mariners had five called. Finally, in the 81st minute and being a man down, the Lions scored the final goal. Myranda Baca (SO/Aliso Viejo, CA) and Kim Benner pushed against the Mariners defense in sync and Benner was able to send the ball into the net from Baca's assist.

Amanda Valentine (JR/Livermore, CA) started in goal for the Lions before Jessica Taukeiaho (SR/Rancho Cucamonga, CA) came in the second half. Taukeiaho grabbed three saves.
