THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Lions (3-0) traveled to Georgia for their first road trip of the season in high spirits following a 4-1 come back in the second half. The first stop on the road was against Johnson & Wales University (0-1). Despite being a man down before 15 minutes into the game, the Lions pulled off a 3-1 victory to give them a three-game winning streak. Sebastian Cortez (JR/Hawthorne, CA) was instrumental in the win as he scored two goals and gave the assist for the third.
Cortez gave Vanguard the lead with a successful penalty kick in the 35th minute. At the end of the half, Vanguard showed that they could play with 10 and still keep up the same aggression and skill level as with 11. Vanguard had nine shots in the 45 minutes while Johnson & Wales could only get off two.
After the break, Johnson & Wales scored a goal off of a free kick, but the Lions were not backing down. Cortez came back in the 74th minute to score from the top shelf. Not even five minutes later, the Pride was back as Nahum Paz (SR/Costa Mesa, CA) scored off of an assist them Cortez. Overall the Lions were behind in shots with 15 to Johnson & Wales 16, yet they kept defense up and were able to focus those shots into goals. Gomez earned six saves on the day, giving him 13 in three games played.
