The #18 Concordia men's soccer team picked up a huge win in their home opener on Saturday, September 01, as they downed visiting #15 Kansas Wesleyan by a count of 4-1 on Eagles Field.
Christian Ramirez scored two goals on five shots and Jose Tamayo had an early assist and goal. Ramirez got the scoring started at 10:31 when Jose Tamayo juked the goalkeeper and dropped a beautiful pass that Ramirez one-timed through the right slot. Tamayo netted his own at 47:47 when he completed a header through the right side on a gorgeous corner kick from William Velasquez. Concordia led 2-0 at half, but their offense was just getting rolling.
William Prado got his second of the year at 56:51 when he received a cross from Neil Anaya, dribbled around the goalkeeper, and punched it into the empty net. Five minutes later it became 4-0 Eagles when Ramirez scored his third in 2012 on a right side cross from Anaya. KWU got their lone goal at 64:17 when Jose Velasco scored on an up-field Javier Cervantes pass.
One word could describe the game, physical. A yellow card just 1:04 into the game set the tone. CU committed 17 fouls, while KWU was at 16. Five yellow cards were issued and one red card. A game that threatened to get chippy never quite got there, but CU will take the result any day. Concordia's midfielders, William Prado and William Velasquez controlled the game all day and dictated the pace.
The Eagles outshot the Coyotes 18-7 and 10-2 in shots on goal. The Concordia defense was physical and stymied the KWU attack. CU goalkeeper Julio Trejo had one save and improved to 2-0 on the year. KWU goalie Alex Montiel had six saves in the loss.
"We know what we are capable as a team," head coach Chris Gould said. "It's a matter of them playing together collectively and I feel like we did that really well today. When you allow talented players to speed the game up, it is very hard to defend against."
Concordia will feel the bruises in this one, but the early season win makes it much sweeter. CU improved to 2-1 and is back in action at home on Monday, September 3 at 11 am at home against Embry-Riddle. Follow live stats at http://www.cuieagles.com/live/soccer/xlive.htm.
