COSTA MESA, Calif.- Following their sweep defeat to non-conference rivals Concordia, the Vanguard University Lions (27-7) hoped to restart a winning streak against the Marymount California University Mariners (4-12). The Lions got back on track with 4-2 victories in games one and two.

Game One: Vanguard 3, Marymount 2 (8 innings)

With the game still tied at zeros after the second inning, the Mariners scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the third. However, the Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the third, through Ariana Huffman (FR/San Diego, CA). The Pride then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks to Kaitlin Estes (JR/Costa Mesa, CA). The Blue and Gold closed out the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Payton Ross (JR/Hughson, CA) and Summer Penner (SR/Anaheim, CA) on base, Kaitlin Estes stepped up to bat and drilled a triple to right field. Ross and Penner both hit home plate for the 4-2 victory. Kaitlin Estes led the way offensively, scoring a run while going 3-3 at bat. Kolbi Tonini (SO/Reno, NV) started and pitched the first seven innings, while Courtney Thornhill (FR/Hughson,CA) pitched the final inning for the win.

Game Two: Vanguard 4, Marymount 2

In nearly identical fashion to the start of game one, the Mariners opened their account with two runs in the top of the second inning. Once again, the Lions immediately responded with a run in the bottom of the second. However, the Pride took control of the tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cassie Balswick (FR/Turlock, CA), Penner, and Ross dealt the damage, with Balswick scoring following a Ross double to right field. Vanessa Dwyer (FR/Temple City, CA) started and pitched all seven innings for the win.
