Phoenix, AZ- Arizona Christian Men's Tennis (ranked seven) knocked off #12 Westmont 7-2 on Saturday to build a two game lead in the GSAC standings. As they have been most of the season, the Firestorm were once again dominate in doubles. Sophomore Alberto Lapiedra won on both number one courts.
Opening the team match with doubles, the Firestorm (11-5, 5-0 GSAC) swept the doubles courts with the closest match finishing at 8-4- which happened to be the match featuring Lapiedra and Senior Seth Moore. Sophomore Enzo Douillac and Senior Ezequiel Suarez posted a solid 8-2 win on court two. Junior Marcelo Balderrama and Sophomore Scott Wheeler netted an 8-3 win on court three.
Needing just two wins in singles to secure the team win, Wheeler (6-1, 6-2) and Moore (6-3, 6-3) took care of any doubts with straight set wins on the first two courts finished.
The Warriors (5-5, 3-2 GSAC) secured the next two matches finished for their two points of the day.
Lapiedra won in straight sets- 6-3 and 6-4- before Balderrama concluded the match with his 6-4 and 6-1 result.
Head Coach Chris Tolson stated, "This is the first complete match the men played all season where the intensity was brought in both doubles and singles. I am so proud of these guys. We will keep working hard every day as we know our best tennis is still ahead of us!"
On Tuesday, the Firestorm will return to action against the University of Montana. That match will be played at Grand Canyon University at 2:00 pm. On Thursday, the Warriors will meet up with old GSAC foe Concordia (CA) up in Santa Barbara.
