KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Peter Smith of Concordia has been named the NAIA National Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Smith was selected based on his performances from Feb. 18 - 24 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.   Smith is the first GSAC player to win the award in the last two seasons.

"After the loss to Biola, we had a meeting and talked about what we could all do to make the team better," Smith said.  "We picked it up another notch last week, they were must win games, and we dug down deep and got it done."

Smith, a 5-foot-11 guard from Escondido, Calif., scored 18 points, and dished out six assists in the Eagles win over then-No. 8 and GSAC Champion Westmont, 93-61, on Feb. 19.  Three days later against then-No. 6 Cal State San Marcos, Smith scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Eagles to an 85-78 win for its second-straight victory over a top ten opponent. In the last game of the week on Feb. 23, Smith scored 14 points on senior day to help lead Concordia to a victory.

"I always just try and do whatever my team needs me to," Smith said.  "My teammates always put me in a position to succeed."

For the week, the senior averaged 21.7 points, 5.0 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game. Smith shot 47.5 percent (19-of-40). He also made 21-of-29 attempts at the foul line.

Concordia is the only team to beat CSU San Marcos in the last three months, snapping their 16-game winning streak that began after Concordia beat them on December 8.  The Eagles finished the regular season 19-10 and 7-7 in the GSAC.  They host local rival Vanguard on Thursday night, February 28 at 7:30 pm inside CU Arena in the First Round of the 2013 GSAC Tournament.  Watch the live stream at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/cui.portal#
