EL CAJON, Calif. – The No. 7 Vanguard women's basketball team handled the pressure of Saturday's crucial Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament seed-determining game, defeating San Diego Christian (RV) 76-49 in the NAIA Game of the Week.

The Lions wrap the regular season at 21-3 and finish league play at 11-3.

With the win, Vanguard secures the all-important No. 2 seed in the upcoming GSAC Tournament. The women's tourney begins Monday but the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds are guaranteed first and second round byes.

Junior Nicole Ballestero (Orange, Calif.) led all scorers with 30 points. She went 10-for-15 from the floor.

The Lions led San Diego 40-25 at the break and out-rebounded the Hawks 21 to 11.

The Blue and Gold doubled the Hawk's point total (50-25) after going on a 10-0 run to start the period. The stretch featured a pair of 3-point baskets from Ballestero, who made six (6-8) in the game.

Vanguard shot 50.9 percent from the field and nailed 13-20 (65.0 %) from beyond the arc.

Seniors Chelsea Alfafara (Dana Point, Calif.) and Alison Drennan (Wheelers Hill, Australia) registered double figures for VU with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Alfafara hit three-of-four from downtown and dished a team-high six assists. Drennan managed two of her own treys and grabbed six off of the glass.

Senior Esther Timmermans (Melbourne, Australia) led the Pride with eight rebounds, while classmate Maree Drennan (Wheelers Hill, Australia) posted a game-best four steals. M. Drennan also had four assists in the win.

The Pride await the results of Monday and Wednesday's first and second round GSAC Tournament games to see who they will play at home on Friday, March 1st. The semifinal will begin at 7:00pm.
