La Mirada, Calif. --- Biola's freshmen came up huge in their first collegiate playoff matches, capped by Stephen Tanquary's match-winner one minute into the first overtime as Biola defeated The Master's 2-1 in a GSAC Tournament Opening Round match on Wednesday night at Al Barbour Field.
The Eagles improve to 11-6-1 and avenge their regular-season finale loss to the Mustangs on Saturday. The Master's season comes to an end with an 8-10-1 overall record.
Tanquary was in the right place at the right time in the first minute of overtime. Fellow freshman Aaren Lewis led a 2-on-1 break and cracked a shot blocked by the Mustangs defender. However, it bounced right to the feet of Tanquary on Lewis' left, who sent the shot into the open net for the winner.
The goal completed a great comeback for the Eagles, who fell behind early in the contest. The Mustangs took an early lead with a goal in the ninth minute as Joey Mikulas sent in a long shot from 30 yards out after a failed clearance attempt by the defense.
The Master's made that goal hold up through the rest of the first half, holding Biola to just five shots.
In the second half, Biola's new formation started to settle in and the Eagles began to dominate the second half. With the loss of key sophomore defender Joao Toscan due to a red card in the last match, Biola switched things up to a 3-5-2 formation. The Eagles out-shot the Mustangs 7-1 in the second half and found the equalizer early on.
In the 60th minute, Kevin Kiser took a free kick from just over the midfield stripe, sending it to the top of the box. Freshman John Hanscom out jumped a pair of defenders and whipped a header high over the keeper and into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Biola kept up the pressure and had a pair of great chances over the final 30 minute of regulation but could not get the go-ahead goal and the teams headed to overtime.
The Master's had the first rush in overtime, but the ball slid harmlessly out of bounds for a goal kick. The punt was corralled and passed ahead by Tony Montalvo right to the feet of Lewis, who started the winning rush.
The Eagles advance to the GSAC Tournament Semifinals where they will face the No. 2 seed in the tournament: San Diego Christian. Biola defeated the Hawks 2-1 when the teams played in La Mirada earlier this season. In the other GSAC Opening Round match, No. 5 Hope International pulled off an upset, defeating No. 4 Vanguard 1-0 in Costa Mesa.
