The Golden State Athletic Conference Board of Directors announced at its meeting this past week the creation of an award to be named after former GSAC Commissioner Cliff Hamlow.
The Cliff Hamlow Champion of Character Award will be given to one male and one female student-athlete on each GSAC campus who demonstrates outstanding athletic achievement, campus and community leadership, future ambition and embraces the five core character values of the NAIA Champions of Character program (Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership). Student-athletes must be at least a junior academically and carry a 3.0 GPA.
Each campus will select their honorees for this award and submit to the conference office. A total of 18 student-athletes will be honored during the 2014-15 season.
These student-athletes will embody everything Dr. Hamlow is about and the role he played as Commissioner of the conference for 26 years.
"I am pleased that we are able to develop an award like this that not only honors deserving student-athletes in regards to the character ideals that they hold as part of the NAIA, but also to honor former Commissioner Hamlow," said current GSAC Commissioner Mike Daniels. "Dr. Hamlow was a giant in his service to the NAIA and the GSAC and his committment to character-driven athletics should be recognized."
Details regarding a banquet to honor these award winners will be released at a later time.
