EL CAJON, Calif. – In a battle between two Top-25 teams, the Hawks got the better end of the deal as No. 6 SDC defeated No. 14 Vanguard University 7-4 Friday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Cade Gotta and Chad Erickson went for a combined 4-for-8 to pack a 1-2 punch in the lineup for the Hawks. Erickson cracked his sixth homer of the season in the bottom of the first inning to score Gotta for an early 2-0 lead.

The Hawks added two in the bottom of the fourth as Jacob Rogers singled through the middle to plate Michael Stowers and Dawson Jones. SDC added three in the bottom of the fifth for a commanding 7-0 lead.

Vanguard answered with three runs in the top of the sixth. The Lions scored the three runs without recording an out against Hawks starter Mark Vasquez. Vasquez settled down to record a strikeout and got some defensive help with a lineout double play by first baseman Taylor Eichhorst to end the scoring in the inning.

Vasquez went six innings for SDC allowing eight hits, three runs, two earned while striking out one to improve to 6-3 on the season. David Johnson came in for Vasquez throwing three innings earning his third save.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 33-12 overall and 20-8 in conference play. SDC is now 2.5 games ahead of The Master's College. Vanguard drops to 25-15 overall and 17-11 in GSAC play.

SDC will play Vanguard in a double header tomorrow as the Hawks will celebrate with senior day. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
