COSTA MESA, Calif. - Vanguard switched its line-up a bit against Golden State Athletic Conference foe Biola (RV), as it played without No. 1 Stefan Kilchhofer (SO/Basel, Switzerland), but the result was identical as The Pride won its 20th-straight GSAC match-up and zeroed its fourth consecutive competitor, 9-0. The victory also gave the reigning 2013 GSAC Champions back-to-back regular season men's tennis crowns.
The Blue and Gold women, also undefeated in 2014 league play, earned their own title on Tuesday, with an 8-1 win over the Eagles.
Vanguard got off to a great start as all three of its doubles squads bested their Eagles' counterparts 8-1.
The individual matches got underway next, and it was clear from the start that Biola was in over its head as The Lions quickly posted the needed deciding points.
Roger Muri (JR/Zurich, Switzerland) played in the number one slot, where he took down Isaiah Pekary 6-1, 6-2. Also playing up a spot was Miguel Saiz Perez (JR/Madrid, Spain), who shutout Luke Mountain 6-0, 6-0.
No. 6 Justin Seller (JR/Gold Coast, Australia) made quick work of Biola's Greg Cobian, recording the Lions' other 6-0, 6-0 margin of victory, while Michael Rjazanov (SO/Berlin, Germany) allowed just a single set point in his 6-0, 6-1 win against Chris Evans at fifth singles.
The Pride's remaining points went to No. 3 Daymon Johnson (SO/Bakersfield, CA) and No. 4 Filip Burnac (SO/Luzern, Switzerland), as both Vanguard players proved too much for their Eagles' competitors, garnering 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-4 triumphs to complete the impressive sweep.
Both Vanguard squads look to complete their perfect conference slates on Saturday versus Concordia. The matches will be played at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center, beginning at 11:00 am.
