COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 9 Vanguard women's tennis secured the 2014 Golden State Athletic Conference regular season title on Tuesday with its 8-1 victory over Biola at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The Lions are 9-0 in league play with one match remaining versus No. 13 Concordia.
The Pride men also took the crown, to record the program's second-straight GSAC Championship.
The women's match started with singles and was decided before doubles began, as the Blue and Gold posted the first five points of the day.
No. 1 Juliet Labarthe (SR/Oklahoma City, OK) held Biola's Kathryn Ashford scoreless in the top billing, while Sophie Angner (SO/Stockholm, Sweden) bested the Eagles' number two, Madeline Heer, 6-0, 6-2.
No. 5 Michaele Sullivan (SO/Henderson, NV), No. 6 Brooke Ferslov-Jensen (FR/Hesperia, CA) and No. 4 Ashley Wao-Udin (FR/Las Vegas, NV) were also quick to finish, wrapping up the win with three dominant victories over their Biola counterparts.
Doubles play was more of the same as the Lions notched all three points to post the 8-1 win.
Vanguard's Labarthe and Sullivan trounced Ashford and Susan Carmichael 8-2 in the number one slot, while The Pride's number three team, Wao-Udin and Ferlsov-Jensen, took down Heer and Kelsey Post 8-3.
The final success went to Vanguard's Gabrielle Alford (JR/Mentone, CA) and Angner, who put together an 8-5 performance to cap the Lions' day.
The Blue and Gold go for perfect on Saturday against the Concordia Eagles at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The away match is scheduled for 11:00 am.
