COSTA MESA, Calif. – Vanguard senior right-fielder John Schwer (Burbank, Calif.) had a 2-for-3 outing for the Lions against Golden State Athletic Conference opponent Arizona Christian (1-3, 1-3 GSAC) on Friday at the VU Baseball Field. The Blue and Gold claimed the contest 3-2 and improve to 5-0 (1-0 GSAC) on the year.

Senior Eddie Rivera (Anaheim, Calif.) won the slate on the mound, throwing 7.2 innings before handing the reigns to junior Marshall McKinnon (Los Gatos, Calif.) who finished off the Firestorm to collect the save. Rivera gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out six in the effort.

The Lions posted two runs in the third off of a walk, a fielder's choice and a pair of ACU mishaps to take a 2-0 lead in the competition.

In the fourth, Vanguard tacked on its third run by way of another Firestorm error and a single to right from Schwer.

Arizona Christian scored runs in the fifth and in the eighth, but the VU field staff held off the comeback to earn its fifth consecutive victory.

The Pride's RBIs on the day were credited to senior Thomas Mobley (Anaheim, Calif.) and junior Bret Collins (Manhattan Beach, Calif.).

Vanguard and ACU are scheduled to wrap the GSAC series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one will begin at 11:00am.
