Long Beach, CA- The Royals needed a little extra time on Wednesday afternoon before they could pull out a 1-0 win over Marymount College. Freshman Brooke Williams scored the lone goal of the day two and a half minutes into overtime.
The first half of Wednesday's contest really belonged to the Mariners (1-1) as they outshot the Royals (2-0) 8 to 1. But the defensive rotation of the Royals- Juniors Lindsay Thompson and Lauren Moses and Freshman Bianca Fard, Sarah Flores, and Kristin Damon- anchored by Sophomore Goalkeeper Sofia Pacino put forth quite a team effort all game long to keep the shutout intact.
Pacino came up with five first half saves including a couple from close range.
Freshman Cindy Cisneros sent the only HIU first half shot wide.
The second half brought a different Royals team out to the field that featured more team energy.
Cisneros provided the first real scoring opportunity for HIU in the 64th minute when she drilled a free kick off the crossbar.
But despite the offensive cohesiveness of Hope International, Marymount was making some offensive surges as well. The ultimate difference in the match came in the 78th minute when Marymount's Monica Fisher hit a ball from the right angle in the box that was headed for the top shelf of the goal. However, Pacino laid out with a backwards dive and redirected the sure goal over the crossbar for one of her eight saves.
The teams combined for five more shots in the final 12 minutes of regulation but none found the net ending regulation tied at 0-0.
HIU lived dangerously letting two balls off corner kicks rattle around in the box in the first few minutes of the overtime period.
However, as the third minute of overtime began, Cisneros found space in the middle of the field and dribbled forward until she laid a through ball off for Kellogg on the right side of the box. Following a touch or two that drew the defense, Kellogg laid a ball across to a wide open Williams in front of the goal. Williams converted her fourth goal of the year for the golden goal game winner.
Head Coach Andrew Paine said, "We challenged the ladies at half time and they responded by digging in together and earning the positive result we were looking for."
On Friday, the Royals will return to the field when they host Marian University (WI) for a 5:00 pm match at Cal State Fullerton.
