Biola Scores Twice in Final Four Minutes for 2-1 Win

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola scored twice in the final four minutes of the game to stun San Diego Christian and pull out a thrilling 2-1 win in a GSAC match on Tuesday night on Al Barbour Field in La Mirada.

The Eagles remain perfect at home with a 4-0-0 record and move to 7-4-1 on the season. Biola remains alone in third place in the conference with a record of 3-2-0. The Hawks drop their second-straight and fall to 6-4-1 and to 2-2-1 in GSAC play.

After an early goal, it looked like San Diego Christian would get its first win in 11 years against Biola thanks to its solid defense. But Biola mounted a late attack and pulled out the win.

In the 87th minute, the Eagles managed an impressive goal to tie the game. Senior Tony Montalvo gathered the ball on the near side and lofted a cross to the far post where junior Kevin Kiser headed it back to the near post where Carlos Ballesteros headed it into the goal from point-blank range to level the score.

But Biola wasn't finished. Just over two minutes later, freshman Aaren Lewis made a run down the far side and crossed a pass into the box. San Diego Christian net minder Carmeron Riley made a diving attempt stop the cross but ended up batting it right to the feet of John Hanscom, who calmly shot it into the empty net for the match-winner.

Both Lewis and Ballesteros were late substitutions in the contest, inserted in for offense just a minute prior to the tying goal being scored.

For his effort, Joshua Crichton received the victory to improve to 6-4-1 on the season, making four saves in the winning effort.

"The boys fought hard and worked hard for the entire game," said Head Coach Bryan Kuderman. "That hard work paid off tonight. We needed this victory to prove to ourselves once again how that hard work pays off. Our theme verse for this season has been Psalms 90:17. How applicable it was tonight!"

Biola fell behind early in the contest as Emmanuel Onywera scored a nice goal for San Diego Christian in the 26th minute. Onywera received a great pass from Victor Flores and beat his defender, then slid a shot under the on-rushing goalkeeper to give the Hawks the lead.

The match was a tight one with both teams battling at midfield. Each time had a number of scoring chances in the first half and Biola held a 6-2 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes. However, the Eagles could not find the equalizer.

San Diego Christian ratcheted up the pressure in the second half, and came close to scoring an insurance goal. The bulk of those chances came over a 13-minute stretch midway through the period. The Hawks best chance was a blast by Leandro Vianna which Biola goalkeeper Joshua Crichton punched over the goal in the 73rd minute.

One minute later, Onywera had a great look at the goal and cracked a shot from just outside of the box only to see Chrichton again come up with a huge save.

The victory was Biola's 10th-straight win over San Diego Christian, which scored its first goal against the Eagles since the 2006 season.
