2017 GSAC Basketball Tournaments

The Golden State Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament seeding took until the final week of the regular season to be determined. Vanguard earned the women's regular season championship and is the top-seeded team in the women's bracket. Hope International earned the top seed on the men's side.

Women's tournament games will be hosted by The Master's University in Santa Clarita, Calif. Vanguard and No. 2 seed Biola will await the winners of the first round played by the No. 3 through No. 6 seeds on Friday, March 3. The semifinals follow on Saturday, March 4.

Men's tournament games will be hosted by Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. GSAC Champion Hope International and No. 2-seed Biola will await the winners of the first round played by No. 3 The Master's, No. 4 Westmont, No. 5 William Jessup and No. 6 Arizona Christian.

The championship games will be hosted by Hope International University on Tuesday, March 7 and will be televised by Fox Sports West. The women will tip off at 5 PM and the men at 8 PM. The GSAC tournament schedule is listed below. Tournament ticket prices are $10 for adults, $5 for students/seniors and $15 for a premium seat.

2017 GSAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Friday, March 3 - First Round hosted by The Master's University

5:00 PM - Game 1: #3 Westmont 72, #6 San Diego Christian 58 - Box Score

  • After a close first quarter, Westmont pulled away in the second quarter outscoring San Diego Christian by 14, and then held on for the win with a 55% shooting percentage for the game.  Westmont's Aysia Shellmire shot 10-for-12 from the field to lead all scorers with 20 points and teammate Kayla Sato scored 16.  Natalie Perales led the Hawks with 14. The Warriors advance to play against Biola in the semifinals.
     

7:30 PM - Game 2: #4 The Master's 85, #5 Arizona Christian 73 - Box Score

  • The Master's jumped out on Arizona Christian early and didn't look back. Hannah Ostrom lead the Mustangs with 21 points (6-8 FG's, 7-7 FT's). Courtney Christmas had her self a game with 22 pts, 9 rebs, 2 asts, 2 stls, and 5 blks. ACU battled back in the fourth quarter and cut it to 6 with 3 minutes to play. TMU held strong down the stretch and extended their lead back to double digits. The Master's will face top-seeded Vanguard in the semifinals.
     

Saturday, March 4 - Semifinals hosted by The Master's University

5:00 PM - Game 3: #2 Biola 51, #3 Westmont 59 - Box Score

  • Westmont took down Biola in semifinal action to advance to the GSAC Women's Basketball Championship game on Tuesday night. The Warriors were led by Kayla Sato (24 pts) and Lauren McCoy (17 pts). The game was tight the entire time as neither team ever led by double digits. Westmont moves on to the tournament finals.  
     

7:30 PM - Game 4: #1 Vanguard 67, #4 The Master's 69 - Box Score

  • The Master's pulled off an upset win over top-seeded Vanguard. The Mustangs held a 7-point advantage at the half and never lost the lead after that. Megan Lindsley led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Bianca Cubello scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The Lions had a chance to tie it or win it in the final seconds but Kandyce Smith missed a layup as time expired. The Master's will now play Westmont in the championship game.
     

Tuesday, March 7 - Championship hosted by Hope International University

5:00 PM - Championship: #3 Westmont 61, #4 The Master's 52 - Box Score

  • Westmont jumped out to an early 18-8 cushion and led wire-to-wire for the win. The Master's cut the lead to four in the final 33 seconds, but the Warriors made 5-of-6 free throws to close out the game.  Aysia Shellmire led the Warriors with an 18-point, 16-rebound double-double and teammate Cora Chan netted four 3-pointers.  Ashley Bartow, of the Mustangs, led all scorers with 19 points. Westmont earns the GSAC's automatic bid to the NAIA Div. I Women's Basketball National Championship at Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings, Montana, March 15-21.  
     

2017 GSAC MEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Friday, March 3 - First Round hosted by Westmont College

5:00 PM - Game 1: #3 The Master's 76, #6 Arizona Christian 61 - Box Score

  • Arizona Christian led by 10 points early in the game and took a 5-point lead into half-time, but The Master's came out shooting nearly 62% in the second half to take the lead and the win.  The Mustangs, which advance to the semifinals against Biola, were led by Lawrence Russell with a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double and Hansel Atencia with 14 points and 3 steals. The Firestorm were led by Shy McClelland and Matt Willkomm with 14 points each.
     

7:30 PM - Game 2: #4 Westmont 102, #5 William Jessup 86 - Box Score

  • Westmont held off William Jessup in a battle of the Warriors. Sean Harman lead the way with 28 points on 6-of-7 shooting from downtown. The ball game was back and fourth in the first half with Westmont holding a six point advantage. In the second half, Westmont caught fire and scored 68 points in 20 minutes. Westmont will now face Hope International who is the top seed in the tournament. Their semifinal game is slated for 7:30 PM on Saturday night.

5:00 PM - Game 3: #2 Biola 68, The Master's 83 - Box Score

  • The Master's hot shooting in the second half (12-for-20 from the field, including 6-for-8 from 3-point range) led the Mustangs to an upset win against No. 2-seed Biola.  Timothy Soares led the Mustangs nearly tallying a triple-double with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 8 blocks.  His teammates Travis Yenor and Lawrence Russell recorded 20 and 18 points, respectively.  Biola was led by Alex Talma with 20 points and Dakari Archer with 17.  The Master's earns a spot in the GSAC Finals on Tuesday.
     

7:30 PM - Game 4: #1 Hope International 76, Westmont 61 - Box Score

  • Down by eight late in the first half, Hope International went on a 14-0 run that stretched across both halves to take the lead and never looked back as they went on to defeat Westmont on its home court. The Royals shot 14-for-19 (74%) from the field as a team in the second half and were led by a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds by Liam Hunt and 17 points by Donny Punter.  Olisa Nwachie led the Warriors with 16 points.  The Royals move on to the GSAC Championship game on Tuesday on their home court.

8:00 PM - Championship: #3 The Master's 79, #1 Hope International 74 (2 OT) - Box Score

  • Hope International led by as much as 8 points in the second half, but The Master's fought back to take the game to overtime with the score knotted at 60. Still tied at the end of the first extra frame, the Mustangs pulled ahead in the second overtime to win the GSAC Tournament Championship for the first time ever led by guards Reid Shackelford with 24 points and Lawrence Russell with 21 points, while Timothy Soares grabbed 14 rebounds.  The Royals were led with double-doubles by Josh Smith with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Liam Hunt with 16 points and 16 boards.  The Master's earns the GSAC's automatic berth to the NAIA Div. I Men's Basketball National Championship in Kansas City, Missouri, March 15-21.
