IRVINE, Calif. – Vanguard's ace hurler, Rachel Stalford, shutout the Royals on Thursday morning in Golden State Athletic Conference softball tournament action. The fourth-seeded Lions, led by five players with two hits apiece, posted a decisive 7-0 victory to advance in the winner's bracket where Vanguard will face No. 1 seed Concordia at 4:15 pm today.

Rachel Stalford
Vanguard University
Rachel Stalford won both of her starts on the week and did not allow a run in her nine innings on the mound. The junior pitcher allowed seven hits while striking out 10 batters in four innings of a 10-2 win against Arizona Christian and in a five-inning complete game 8-0 win against NCAA Div. II Azusa Pacific. Stalford surpassed the 100-strikeout mark on the season in her second start of the week.

Vanguard University
Breanne Gomez hit 6-for-9 (.667) at the plate last week with three doubles, a triple and five RBI. In the win of a doubleheader split with Arizona Christian, the junior catcher was a perfect 2-for-2, with a run scored, a double, a triple, a walk and an RBI. She also had two doubles and four RBI in the sweep of NCAA Div. II Azusa Pacific.

Westmont College
Will Barring led Westmont offensively to a 3-game road sweep of Arizona Christian, moving the Warriors to within one game of clinching a berth in the GSAC Baseball Tournament and within one game of tying the school record for wins in a single season. In the series, the junior centerfielder was 7-for-10 (.700) at the plate with seven runs scored, a double, two RBI, three walks and two steals.

Concordia University
Keegan Yuhl threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout as No. 16 Concordia defeated No. 5 San Diego Christian, 1-0. The senior pitcher scattered three hits and struck out seven. He improved to 10-3 on the year and helped Concordia take two-of-three from the Hawks. Yuhl is second in the nation in innings pitched (98.2), fourth in wins, and seventh in strikeouts (96). He is second in the GSAC in ERA (2.37) and second in wins.
